What to put in the message

PickUp Note ships no analytics and no crash reporting — deliberately. That means we genuinely do not know anything went wrong until you tell us, and your description is the only evidence there is. The more of this you can include, the better:

  • iPhone or Android, and the OS version.
  • The app version. Open Settings in PickUp Note and scroll to the very bottom: the last line on that screen is the version, and it looks like Version 1.2.3+45. Copy it exactly as it appears — both numbers matter, and the one after the plus sign is what tells us which build you are actually running.
  • What you expected to happen, and what happened instead.
  • Roughly when it happened, and whether it has happened more than once.
  • Whether the feature involved needs a permission you may have declined — location, notifications, calendar or camera.
  • A screenshot, if it helps — but see below first.

Please do not send us more than we need. E-mail is not encrypted end to end, and we would rather not hold your errands. Crop or blank out list contents you would not want a stranger reading, and never send us your recovery code, a sign-in link or a password. Nobody here will ever ask you for any of them.

Why didn’t it remind me?

This is the most common question, and there is no single answer — but there is a place that tells you the real one. Settings › Notification history lists every notification decision the app made, including the ones it withheld, with the reason. Start there. The usual causes:

Notification history Collect the prescription Sent 5 Aug 2026 14:20 Milk Held back Quiet hours Weekly shop Held back Daily reminder limit reached Bread Held back Already taken care of Return the parcel Sent 5 Aug 2026 09:12 PickUp Note keeps 90 days of notification history on this device.
Settings › Notification history, drawn as built. Every decision, with the reason it was made — the held-back ones are the interesting half.
  • One of the conditions was not true. A reminder fires when all of its conditions hold at once. Tap the errand and then “Why now?” to see each condition and its state.
  • A condition could not be checked, so it was unknown. Unknown is not the same as true, and the app will not fire on it. A weather condition with no weather source, or a shop with no opening hours, lands here.
  • Notifications are not permitted. Check Settings › Permissions, then the phone’s own settings. On iOS the system dialog is shown once only, so a declined prompt has to be reversed in iOS Settings.
  • The app held it back on purpose — because of quiet hours, the daily cap, a per-category cap, a cooldown after a similar notification, or duplicate suppression. If you have been dismissing a kind of reminder repeatedly, the app sends fewer of them for a while, by design.
  • Arrival was noticed late, or not at all. The operating system, not PickUp Note, decides when you have entered or left a place. It is usually quick outdoors and can be slow or silent indoors, in a car park, or with power saving on.
  • The phone was asleep. Some checks happen when the app next wakes rather than at the exact moment the condition became true.

If Notification history shows the reminder was sent and you never saw it, that is a phone-side problem worth telling us about — include the time it says.

I lost my phone. Where are my lists?

The honest answer depends entirely on one thing: whether you had turned encrypted backup on before you lost it. PickUp Note works with no account and no server, and that cuts both ways.

Your personal lists

Your personal lists are not on our server. They never were — that is the design, and it is why the app needs no account. If encrypted backup was off, they existed only on that phone, and losing the phone lost them. We are sorry, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise.

If backup was on: install PickUp Note on the new phone, sign in, and enter the recovery code you were shown when you switched backup on. That code is the key. It is held in your phone’s secure keystore and nowhere else — we hold no copy, and we cannot recover it for you, restore your backup without it, or reset it. Anyone who could would be able to read your data, which is precisely what the design refuses.

Shared household lists

These do live on our server, because sharing requires it. Sign in on the new phone and your household and its shared lists come back on their own. Nothing needs to be recovered.

What is never in a backup

Photos, parking spots, notification history and your settings stay on the phone only and are not included in backup.

Moving to a new phone on purpose? Turn backup on and write the recovery code down before you wipe the old one. Settings › Encrypted backup.

Why does it want background location?

For one job: telling you about an errand when you arrive somewhere you saved yourself. If you have named your usual supermarket in Settings › Saved places, PickUp Note asks iOS or Android to notify it when you enter or leave that place, and the operating system does the watching. What the app receives is “you arrived at the place you called Supermarket” — not a coordinate, and not a stream.

  • PickUp Note keeps no continuous location history. There is no timeline of your movements on the phone or on our server, and no place for one to be written.
  • Declining is a real option. Everything else keeps working; arrival reminders are the only thing you lose. The app explains what the permission is for before the system dialog appears, and declining that explanation never triggers the dialog at all.
  • Departure is the imprecise one. A phone cannot reliably tell the moment you leave a place — the system often notices once you are already down the road — so before-you-go reminders lean on earlier signals such as a calendar event or a departure time you set yourself.

The privacy policy sets out the five bounded ways location is used, including the one that leaves a rounded point on our server and why.

A few others

Weather says it does not know

Weather needs a source, and severe-weather warnings need a warning feed configured for your country. Where one is unavailable the app reports that it does not know rather than reporting that all is clear, and any condition depending on it stays unknown instead of firing.

I want a copy of my data

Settings › Data Export builds a complete copy of what is on the phone, on the phone, and it goes nowhere until you send it somewhere. No account is needed for that part. The same screen can request a copy of anything held in the cloud for your account, if you have one.

I want my account deleted

Settings › Account Deletion. Sessions end immediately and nothing is destroyed for fourteen days, so signing in again during that window cancels it. Deleting the account does not touch what is on your phone; the app keeps working without one.

Something in the app is wrong in my language

Very possibly. Most of the app’s translations have not yet been reviewed by a human translator, and we would rather fix a specific bad string than pretend the problem does not exist. Send the screen and the wording and it will be corrected.
